How Western Calculates GPA

Western currently uses a numeric grading scale on transcripts and academic records, and as a result, does not issue a grade point or cumulative average for students. This tool computes one for you using the standard conversion used for graduate and professional school applications. More details are available in the Academic Calendar.

Applicable Programs

The grading scale below applies to undergraduate students in: Arts and Humanities, Business, Education, Engineering, Health Sciences, Information and Media Studies, Medicine & Dentistry (BMSc, BSc), Music, Science, Social Science, Continuing Studies at Western, and the Affiliated University Colleges: Huron, King's. Note that Engineering subjects have their own grading scheme — Engineering students should direct grade questions to the Engineering Dean's office.

Calculation Steps

  1. Convert each course's percentage grade to its 4.0-scale GPA value.
  2. Multiply each course's GPA value by its credit weight.
  3. Sum all the weighted GPA values.
  4. Sum the total credits completed.
  5. Divide step 3 by step 4 to get your cumulative GPA.

Failures & Special Cases

Failed grades are included in GPA calculations. Grades below 50% are considered failures. Any grade below 40% is treated as 40% for calculation purposes; grades between 40–49% are included at their actual value. If a course is dropped after the deadline, it is recorded as F and counted as 40% in the average.
